What I learned from running a 100-mile ultra-marathon. In 2019, I took part in Endure 24. A crazy event where you complete as many 5-mile laps as possible of an off-road trail in 24 hours . Yes, I know it sounds a bit like some bizarre form of punishment but anyway… Spoiler alert! I didn’t actually manage 100 miles however it really hammered home 3 things.

The mind is more powerful than the body. After I had managed 30 miles my legs were in pain. Pain that would have forced me to stop under normal circumstances but knowing that I had another 18 hours ahead of me reframed that discomfort and allowed me to push on further than I would have thought possible.

The people you surround yourself with make all the difference. Endure is a race like no other in terms of the community support and comradery of fellow racers. At 2 am shuffling along I was constantly amazed by everyone’s spirit and good humour. Having a chat and a joke with someone when you are at your lowest ebb can be so important.

Setting yourself an audacious goal can be an amazing way to achieve things you thought were impossible. In this case, I managed 75 miles which for a bloke in his 40’s with a dodgy knee I was pretty happy with.
