Share codes are part of right to work checks, and although these checks may be considered to be simple, they can still cause a lot of confusion! If you’re looking for information and help about what share codes are and how you can use them to find work in the UK, we have put together a handy guide to help.
A share code is a code that migrant workers can give to potential employers to easily and quickly prove that they have the right to work in the UK.
There are a number of criteria that you have to meet to be eligible for a share code which proves your right to work in the UK. You can use the share code service if you have a pre-settled or settled status in the UK, or if you have applied for immigration status via the UK Immigration: ID Check.
Gather your documents: To access your share code, you will need your passport or identity card, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or visa and your Biometric Residencies Card number.
Generate your code: Head to the government’s website to start the process.
Once you have generated your shared code, you will then be able to share it with employers if they ask you for proof about your right to work within the UK. To view your code, your employer will need your date of birth and code.
When you share the code with a potential employer, they will be able to see the types of work you can do, how long you have the right to work in the UK (if you have a restriction), whether you are able to access national services such as the NHS, and whether you can open a bank account or apply for credit.
