Those feeling anxious and irritable about their first day back in the office may actually be suffering from symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Dr Mark Wright, a consultant in liver medicine at University Hospital Southampton, said thousands of people will attribute such feelings to “work dread”.

But he said many of those who had enjoyed a boozy Christmas and New Year were actually likely to be facing alcohol withdrawal as they attempted to get back to a regular routine.

“People will now be feeling anxious about their return to work. But the cause for many will be alcohol withdrawal symptoms following sustained heavy drinking,” he said. He added people should think about “scaling back” their alcohol intake, increase water intake and taking days off alcohol.
